Overnight Repairs Get the #62 Camaro to the Starting Grid
Watkins Glen, NY (June 30, 2012) – The #62 Mitchum Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro suffered a massive impact during qualifying Friday afternoon, severely jeopardizing its chances of making today’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race. George Richardson was behind the wheel when the car made contact with the wall in the “laces of the boot” (turn 6) and flipped over, landing on its wheels facing the wrong direction.

The impact caused heavy damage to all four corners of the car, the roof, doors and fenders. Before the car was even towed back to the paddock the crew had already sprung into action – preparing for the worst case scenario. Working well into the early morning hours the car was put back together and made this morning’s final practice session at 9:00. All that is left are a few minor setup adjustments and the car will be ready to take the grid at 3:00 this afternoon.
“The guys pulled off a miracle last night. They worked flat out until the car was put back together,” said team principal Chris Mitchum. “The crew has been tested these last two weeks – we got taken out before the green flag dropped at Road America so the guys had to rebuild the right side while on the road. These guys have proved their worth time and time again and I couldn’t be more proud of them today. They just don’t give up.”
“I can’t thank these guys enough. The crew works extremely hard on a normal race weekend so what they did for me and Joey (Atterbury) is unbelievable,” said George Richardson. “Most people have no idea what it takes to go racing – so much work is done behind the scenes before we get on track and I really want to give the crew the credit they deserve.”
“When one team suffers a setback the GRAND-AM racing community steps up. Stevenson Motorsports offered parts and numerous teams stopped by last night to offer a hand,” added Mitchum. “We couldn’t have made it without the help so I need to thank everyone who lent a hand.”
Mitchum’s second Camaro qualified 5th for this afternoons race so look for Tim Bell and Gunter Schaldach to be running up front while the #62 looks to move forward.
