Salinas, CA (July 8, 2011) Mitchum Motorsports two car Camaro team qualified both Camaros well inside the top ten for Saturday’s 2.5 hour GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Joey Atterbury grabbed the third starting spot with a time of 1:36.359 in the #62 car while Robert Stout qualified his #6 car in 5th position, a mere 0.08 seconds behind Atterbury.
This is the 3rd race in a row where both Mitchum cars qualified inside the top ten and shows just how far the program has come. All four drivers have been quick since unloading the cars on Thursday, consistently keeping the cars inside the top five in every session, even as the crew worked hard making improvements and trying some new things on the cars.
“This was a great performance by both Joey and Robert. They ran virtually identical lap times and will be starting near the front tomorrow,” said team principal Chris Mitchum. “The cars have been solid since getting to California which is a testament to the hard work by the crew back at the shop. I am really pleased with the position we are in for the race.”
Atterbury shares the #62 with Lawson Aschenbach and will turn the car over to him mid-way through the race. Jeff Bucknum will take over for Stout and finish the race in the #6 car. With all four drivers being fast, both cars are in good position for strong finishes.
“I’ve said it before but we have great driver pairings. All four guys are fast and there are no weak links. This lets us run the race we want to, letting things unfold and allowing us to make calls based on fuel and tires instead of worrying about losing time out on track,” added Mitchum. “We have an excellent opportunity here at Mazda Raceway for two strong finishes. We have been knocking on the door of the podium for a while now so hopefully everything will come together tomorrow.”
